Synopsis

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone. . . .

A convict with a thirst for revenge

A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager

A runaway with a privileged past

A spy known as the Wraith

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes

Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first.

My thoughts…

Even almost a month after reading this book, the characters and the story lurk in my mind. I sometimes wonder what Kaz would do, or how Inej would react.

Ketterdam (modelled after present world Amsterdam), makes an interesting setting for the story. While Shadow and Bone is set in war-torn Ravka full of royal schemes, battlefields and honour; Ketterdam is the trading hub of the grishaverse filled with thieves, tradesmen and of course some cameos with people of other lands. This makes for an interesting plot as most stories are driven by heroic battles to save the world, good vs evil etc, but in the six of crows we follow an odd pairing of six thieves who’s sole driving force is getting rich.

I will not give spoilers, but the story is about so much more than the heist, other plots develop, however the characters take centre stage. Every character was endearing and their nuanced with rich histories that shaped them to be who they were. Like real people they weren’t free from flaws, but even through their cruelties and wrongdoing I loved them all the same.

This book series is perfect and if any of the six of crows are free I would love to have coffee with you (pleassee). The bonds these characters forge, and the trust they have for one another despite their upbringings and circumstances, and despite knowing better made me jump up and down in joy and curl up in a ball and cry. I highly recommend this book, and if you’ve read it tell me how excited you are to see it on screen (omggggggggggggg!!!!)

Final review

Genre: fantasy fiction
Intensity: medium-high
Pace: fast

Trigger warnings: sexual assault, rape, graphic depictions of violence

This book duology that made me laugh and cry but most importantly love. All the characters are well developed and have a distinct personality with unique quirks and they sometimes make the “wrong” decisions. Their intentions are mostly pure but their means aren’t and they teeter on the edge of good and evil. Exploring themes of moral ambiguity, friendship with a fun action packed plot in the perfect blend of words, six of crows is a must read.
